Birth of a Book

Beautiful video of traditional pre-press, offset print to produce hand-bound books.

Glen Milner produced this book-binding vignette at Smith-Settle Printers in Leeds, England as the binders bound Suzanne St Albans’ Mango and Mimosa.

Then & Now

Love this. I know the woman who owns Peter Pan restaurant (@ Queen and Peter, natch) and she bought the place in 1978 (i.e. around the time of the “then” picture). She was describing to me how industrial and seedy the area was at the time (hence why she was able to afford to buy in) and this picture just fits what she was telling me.

I always think that the “then” pictures are much nicer and more interesting…

Passive-Aggressive Note of the Day: Borders locked up the last of its brick-and-mortar bookstores last Sunday. The above list of gripes — reportedly posted at one of many out-of-business outlets — claims to speak for all Borders employees.

A transcript follows, courtesy of EW’s Shelf Life:

  • We hate when a book becomes popular simply because it was turned into a movie.
  • It confused us when we were asked where the non-fiction section is.
  • Nicholas Sparks is not a good writer … if you like him, fine, but facts are facts.
  • We greatly dislike the phrase “Quick question.” It’s never true. And everyone seems to have one.
  • Your summer reading list was our summer reading NIGHTMARE. Also, it’s called summer reading, not three days before school starts reading.
  • It’s true that we lean to the left and think Glenn Beck is an idiot.
  • We always knew when you were intently reading Better Homes and Gardens, it was really a hidden Playboy.
  • Most of the time when you returned books you read them already — and we were onto you.
  • Limit One Coupon did not mean one for every member of your family — this angered us. Also, we did know what coupons were out.
  • It never bothered us when you threatened to shop at Barnes & Noble. We’d rather you do if you’re putting up a stink.
  • “I was just here last week and saw this book there” meant nothing to us. The store changed once a week.
  • When you walked in and immediately said, “I’m looking for a book,” what you really meant to say is, “I would like you to find me a book.” You never looked. It’s fine, it’s our job — but let’s be correct about what’s really happening here.
  • If you don’t know the author, title, or genre, but you do know the color of the cover, we don’t either. How it was our fault that we couldn’t find it we’ll never understand.
  • We were never a daycare. Letting your children run free and destroy our section destroyed a piece of our souls.
  • Oprah was not the “final say” on what is awesome. We really didn’t care what was on her show or what her latest book club book was. Really.
  • When you returned your SAT books, we knew you used them. We thought it wasn’t fair — seeing that we are not a library.

Booksellers are so snarky. I love them. Shame they’re a dying breed :(

As much as I am not a big fan of the huge uber book store.  I do like this.

Trying to get back to University.

So for  while now I have been struggling with what to do with my life.  Up until a couple years ago I had managed to get by pretty well considering my lack of education or training for any type of job.  I worked hard, worked my way up into management positions and was making some decent wages.

However, that all changed nearly 2 years ago when I was laid off from my job.  Since that time things have not been going very well for me.  I’ve been unable to find steady work and I have undergone a kidney transplant.  The transplant takes some time to organize and then there is a fairly long recovery period as well.

After recovering I struggled to find work, then when I did I was laid off 2 months in.  Since that time I haven’t found any work despite the (literally) hundreds of resumes sent out.

Given everything that is going on, and that I currently have no girlfriend or anything holding me here, I have decided that getting a University degree is a smart thing to do.  But I have also long had a dream of spending far far more time in the UK than I have been able to so far.  And so I have decided that my goal is to go and get my degree in the UK.  This will cost a great deal of money.  Money that I currently do not have.

But I am hoping that anyone and everyone that reads this will click this link below and help me live my dream.  I assure you that every last penny that is sent will be used to help me make this dream a reality.

I also ask that if you read this, that you share it.  I know that it’s tough all over but if it spreads and lots of people donate small amounts the odds are that I can reach my goal, get my student visa and get my degree!  Of course I wouldn’t at all be unhappy with very large donations as well.

Here is the link to my page where I am collecting.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask and I will answer.
